What's in a name?

Posted by Anna Kate Sunday, January 16, 2011

What is one of the few things that's truly ever your own?

Why, your name, of course.  Although we don't get much choice in the matter, our name is what identifies us.  Your name appears countless times throughout your life on paper, electronic forms and, of course, anything that you can get your monogram on.

Being from the Peach State, I was given a traditional Southern name.  The alleged history behind this custom is that all good Southerners felt obligated to please both sides of the family by honoring them with a name chosen from each family tree.  Otherwise, you would have to deal with your mother and/or mother-in-law.
Make no mistake about it, manners matter in the South.

Now lucky for me, I get to decode the meaning behind two names.  The first, Anna, means grace or gracious.  The second, Kate, means pure.  Some people like to think that your name influences your character.  I suppose in my case, having a double name isn't so bad after all.

What does your name mean and how does it identify you?  How can you use this to your advantage in social media outlets, the professional world, or in creating your own personal brand?  And, the question we are all asking ourselves, what else lying around is now subject to being monogrammed?
